Tom Cruise's Les Grossman from Tropic Thunder Set for Spin-Off Film

News - 1 April 2024
When Tom Cruise's name is mentioned, action films and dangerous stunts immediately come to mind. However, Cruise has proven himself to be more than just an action hero with films like Eyes Wide Shut and Interview with a Vampire. In 2008, he surprised everyone with his role as Les Grossman in Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder.

nnTropic Thunder follows Tugg Speedman (played by Ben Stiller), a spoiled action superstar who heads to Southeast Asia to star in a big-budget war film. When real fighting erupts in the jungle, Speedman and his co-stars, including Oscar winner Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.) and comedian Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black), must become real-life soldiers.

nnThe film is a satire of prestigious war films, particularly those based on the Vietnam War, as well as the Hollywood studio system and method acting. Cruise's portrayal of Les Grossman, a bizarre Hollywood producer, was a departure from his usual roles. Cruise donned a "fat suit" and delivered many hilarious phone calls, making him almost unrecognizable.

nnAfter the release of Tropic Thunder, there were talks of a spin-off film centered around Les Grossman. However, it seemed like the project was put on hold for a while. In a surprise turn of events in 2022, Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie announced that the spin-off is finally happening.

nnWith Cruise still tied up with the Mission: Impossible series, working on Top Gun 3, and producing films for Warner Bros., the release date for the spin-off remains uncertain. Fans of Cruise and Tropic Thunder will have to wait to see what new hilarity and antics Les Grossman will bring to the big screen.
